BUT, I would wait and get the new improved one with the more silent fabric and also get the $28 anchoring kit so you tie up the back corners on days when the wind doesn't blow.

They do snap, crackle and pop a little when the wind is gusting.

When it's just the two of us and the dog, I dig a 12" deep hole, screw in the Tommy Bahama umbrella and back fill the hole. Used in its lowest position it's just tall enough for short beach chairs and the wind doesn't knock it over. Well, it hasn't for 10 years anyway. Never turned inside out either.

Waaay to much "work"....lose the "screw" thing.... rock it (canvas umbrella) in ;)

Why would I stop using something that has worked so well? If I can dig a little hole about the size of a child's sand bucket anyone can pretty much. Same with the screw and foldup handles on the bottom half pole. Heck, I'll be 74 in a few months and I know what works.

We have a canvas umbrella in Richmond. Heavy, tedious, bulky and even heavier and stinky when it's wet and has to be stored. Serioulsy, I can't think of anyone who bothers with them anymore. ;)

But, I get it, you go with what works for you!

On the original post...@bill mentioned NESO, aside from the slight UV leak (a canvass umbrella will cast shade under a NESO) it's our go to when a crowd is in town (still setting our three canvas old skool). I'd rent both, after that I think (IF you really stretch your NESO and bury the bags) you'll go NESO...we just found the Shibumi fell short in many area for our use case.

I had a neso one summer, one summer only. neso...lol

Bet ya didn't really stretch the fabric and then place each "bag" in shovel dug (hard walls) holes (then covered) only then erecting/standing up the four (not the two) support poles ;)

It's kinda an "art" - and the YT videos I've seen are pretty much worthless

As said, I'm still an "umbrella guy" but for larger groups the NESO provides a ton of sound reduced shade.

The shibumi folks must be doing something in the Tri - looking toward shore earlier this week, I saw Shibumi after Shibumi along the beach...of course wind was SWWish (our predominant summer blow) so they were all luffing like crazy...for us dudes that grew up in open locker rooms and rat tailing was a thing, the Bumi's were delivering that in spades. NE around 10, they do very well.

I posted a pic of my sand anchors, guess it got deleted so too bad. A simple disc of plywood with a hole drilled through the center, rope through the hole and knotted, other end of rope tied high on the umbrella pole. Bury the disc about 12 to 18" in the sand upwind, with the flat side perpendicular to the umbrella line.

Yep, putting a "cross" like a letter X works as well - it's also a way waterbillies bed non weight/supported poles (like post and rope stuff) so they don't come outta the ground.

Ya oughta post the pics again, I think folks would benefit; and maybe, just maybe help them avoid the "walk of shame". (when you gotta walk down the beach to retrieve your umbrella passing "your schit almost hit/skewered me" looks all the way to your umbrella. And then, you gotta walk back....

Plus side for Shibumis include light, portable, one person set up is possible. Downsides are they are noisy for everyone around you, too (if you care about that), they are all the same, so "we are the Shibumi to the left of the guard stand" won't work. And its 250 for a shock corded tent pole and a flag, basically. Light winds are a deal buster for a Shabumi, unless you enjoy the soft caress of nylon every so often. Although OBX isn't well known for low wind. Land breezes are a bummer, too, as stated above.
