How many hours of SAT prep is enough? ›

Most study gurus recommend a minimum of 10 hours weekly for at least two weeks before the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). That should be considered the bare minimum necessary to achieve a passing score. Unless you are an exemplary student with an eidetic memory, you will need more time preparing for the SAT.

To get the most accurate feel for the real SAT, I recommend using the official SAT practice tests provided by the College Board. They currently offer eight full-length practice tests which closely resemble the actual exam.

The average Prep Scholar client is able to improve their composite SAT score by 180 points, with the top 25% improving their score by 370 points or more.

SAT results are calculated on a scale of 400 to 1600, with 1600 clocking in as the highest available score. A score of 1400 demonstrates academic excellence on all sections of the test, reading, writing, and mathematics.

So try to study, at a minimum, at least two weeks before your test. A month or longer is, of course, even better. If test day's coming up, though, and you have very, very little time to study, don't freak out! You can still get a good score as long as you utilize the time you do have wisely.

Reading comprehension is often considered the most difficult section of the SAT for students to improve their scores.

You'll do worse on the real SAT than on an SAT practice test. Will you score 10x worse? Absolutely not. You'll probably do about 7% worse: your 1400 will come in around 1300.

If you've taken the SAT/ACT once or twice but still want to raise your score, a prep class will be an excellent option for you. In general, it's best to choose a test date that's at least two months before your college applications are due.

A perfect score on the SAT is 2400; and for the ACT, it is 36. The national average score for the SAT is 1540 (combining the math, reading, and writing sections of the test). For the ACT, the average score is between 20 and 21.

The ideal time to start studying for the SAT varies depending on your individual circ*mstances. However, a general rule of thumb is to start preparing for the test at least 3-6 months in advance.

For an even higher score, such as 1200, which is at about the 75th percentile, students may study for anywhere from 150 to 200 hours. And to score at or above the 90th percentile, with a score of 1400 or above, you might have to study for up to 300 hours. Now, you may be thinking, 300 hours just for SAT prep?

As an example, if you get a 1200 on your practice test, and your target score is 1500, then you have 300 points to improve, meaning you should put in about 80 hours. You could space this out (say, three hours per week for six months) or study intensely over the summer (16 hours per week for five weeks).

Don't spend too much time reading the passage

The SAT Reading Test is 65 minutes long and contains 5 passages with associated questions. This means you need to spend 13 minutes per passage on average. You should plan to read through an SAT passage in about 5 minutes.
