We are pleased to announce that our school has enrolled with SAFEDE, by STOPit Solutions. SAFEDE is a technology platform to assist students, parents, and staff in asking for and privately accessing a wide variety of help and resources.

Our aim with SAFEDE is to provide:

  • Private access to basic needs resources,

  • Convenient linkage to school, community, local, state, and federal resources and helplines,

  • A culture that recognizes that all of us need help at different points in our life and asking for help is an important life skill.

SAFEDE is a tool that works by empowering students, parents, and staff to access help they need with dignity and privacy. All parties will have access to the SAFEDE mobile app, which has three main features:

  1. ASK FOR HELP can be used to anonymously request help from local school contacts, including Messenger which allows anonymous two-way communication between school contacts and help requesters.

  2. CRISISTEXTLINE can be access directly from the app to text with non-local trained crisis counselors

  3. GET RESOURCES can be used to search community, local, state, and federal resources and helplines

No personal information is needed to use SAFEDE. The only way personally identifiable information will be accessible through SAFEDE is if a requester voluntarily includes it within the content of a request or message.

Both our school and SAFEDE are committed to protecting the privacy of student data. STOPit is a signatory to the Student Privacy Pledge, spearheaded by the Future of Privacy Forum and the Software & Information Industry Association. You may review STOPit’s Privacy Policy for details, including more information on how anonymous reporting works. Here is a video to learn more SAFEDE/HelpMe Parent Video.

Please note that students in grades 4-12 will be invited to download the SAFEDE app from the app store on his or her smartphone at no charge between now and spring break. Participation is voluntary. The application will become active beginning on Monday, April 8th.

We encourage you to download the SAFEDE app and search for your students' school using the directory. You can privately ask for help for your student, family, others you care about, or even acquaintances who appear to need help.

Together, we can make sure everyone in our community gets what they need to thrive. Thank you!

The SFSP is a federally funded program operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and is managed locally by the Delaware Department of Education (DDOE). The goal of the SFSP is to ensure that children receive the nutrition they need to continue to grow, learn and play throughout the summer months!

Students will keep their Chromebooks over the summer. Hopefully, students continue to take good care of the Chromebooks so that they are ready to be used in the fall.

If your student’s Chromebook is in need of repairs, the NCS Technology team will be available on the following dates:

Monday, June 24, 2024 (Meece and Senior High Campus Only)

Monday, July 22, 2024 (Meece, Junior and Senior High Campus)

We cannot guarantee that the Chromebook will be repaired that day. If the repair needs more time, we will collect the Chromebook and notify you when it is ready to be picked up. Please be patient as the Technology team will be working on summer projects and enjoying time off.

Do not bring a Chromebook in for repair on any other day, besides the two dates listed above.

You can find some basic troubleshooting tips at https://www.newarkcharterschool.org/chromebooks

Your student is welcome to continue using their Chromebook over the summer. If the Chromebook will not be used all summer or for an extended period of time, it is recommended that you follow Google's long-term storage procedure to maintain battery health. You can view those steps here: https://support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/9139543?hl=en

Bonjour, parents and guardians of 8th graders!

We are starting the exciting work of planning for the 8th grade dinner dance scheduled for Friday, May 31, 2024, and we need your help to make it a success. While most of our students will be attending NCS high school next year, a few of them are going to other schools or states. With that in mind, this special occasion might be the last time the entire current class of 2028 is together, so we want to make it MEMORABLE and WONDERFUL for our memorable and wonderful children!

To keep the ticket cost low to families, we are depending on your additional contributions: snacks, desserts, and money toward paper products and other necessities. Please look at this sign-up link https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0C44AAAE28A2F5C70-49102850-8thgrade and choose one or more items to donate. Snacks and desserts will be due on 5/31, but we need to secure cash donations by 5/29 so that we have time to shop.

Merci in advance for your generous help!

RESOURCES

Newark Charter School - Junior High (18)

Arriving at school on time is important. We are happy to welcome students into the building beginning at 7:05 am. However, as the Code of Conduct states, “In grades 6-12, class will begin at 7:30, and any student who arrives after 7:30 will be marked tardy.” In addition, “When a student accumulates any combination of 5 unexcused late arrivals a student detention will be issued.”

An email will be sent to the parent/guardian of students who accumulate 5 unexcused tardies within the same trimester. Detentions take place on Wednesdays from 2:20 pm - 3:20 pm in the main office. Students must be picked up from school at 3:20. There is no bus transportation available.

These are your asthma action plans, diabetic action plans and orders, seizure action plans and orders, life threatening food allergy action plans, and any other medical action plan you may need for next year. Please remember these plans need to be updated yearly!

Please don't forget to pick up your medications from the health office at the end of year! Here is the permission form to have medication sent home with your student.

All controlled substance medications are to be picked up by a parent or guardian.

Any medications or emergency medications not picked up by end of year will be discarded.

”I understand that all medication, including over-the-counter medication requiring assistance on a field trip or approved school activity must have a healthcare provider’s order either on the medication label or a written prescription.”

”I also understand the only medication a student may self-carry is a rescue inhaler or EpiPen, if age appropriate and a self-carry form is completed. All other medication must be in the possession of a staff member at all times."

Erin's Law

Newark Charter School - Junior High (22)

Erin's law requires all Delaware public school students in pre-kindergarten through grade 6, their educators and families be provided information about personal body safety and child sexual abuse awareness and prevention. Named in honor of Erin Merryn, a victim of child sexual abuse who worked to enact legislation on this subject throughout the country, Erin’s Law is intended to help young victims speak up about child abuse and concerned adults recognize the signs of abuse so that children can get the assistance they need.

Newark Charter uses a state-approved educational program called Second Step to teach personal body safety and abuse awareness. Guidance counselors deliver this research-based, age-appropriate instruction in group guidance classes in grades K-6. Parents may review the program, lesson topics, and family resources at any time at https://www.secondstep.org/child-protection
