Why are flights delayed from Amsterdam? ›

Increasingly turbulent weather leads to flight delays at Amsterdam Airport. The rising frequency of electrical storms through the summer months is causing serious problems at Amsterdam Airport, leading to more regular flight delays and cancellations.

Your luggage offloading is usuall done in 20–30 minutes. You can be at the train, bus or taxi station 2 minutes later. A train trip to central station amsterdam, by far the cheapest and fasted way to get there, takes about 15–20 minutes.

That time can vary, at Schiphol, it has taken me from 15minutes to almost an hour. It all depends on how many planes landed at that time. Of course, most times, the planes from North America land early (Jet Stream helps) so your time out the door may not be long after your estimated arrival time.

Regulation 261/2004 sets out the following amounts: €250 compensation for a delayed flight up to 1500 km. €400 compensation for a delayed flight between 1500 and 3500 km. €600 compensation for a delayed flight exceeding 3500 km.

While airlines want to get passengers to their destinations on time, problems like bad weather and mechanical issues can and sometimes do make it difficult for flights to arrive on time or result in flights being cancelled.

You should have plenty of time to get to your connecting flight. Minimum transfer times at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol are 40 minutes for Schengen flights and 50 minutes for non-Schengen flights.

Most travellers at Schiphol have to pass through passport control, except those travelling to or from a Schengen country. You can take a lot of things with you to or from the Netherlands, but there are of course exceptions. Some things, like illegal drugs, fake weapons and endangered animal products may never be brought into the Netherlands. For medicines, food items and large sums of cash there are separate rules.
