This picture taken on July 29, shows the SeineRiverin Paris, France.

The women’s and men’s Olympic triathlons will go ahead on Wednesday in the French capital, Paris 2024 organizers and World Triathlon announced.

Poor water quality levels in the River Seine had led to the cancellation of numerous training swims and forced the postponement of the men’s triathlon, which was scheduled for Tuesday.

“The results of the latest water analyses, received at 3:20 a.m., have been assessed as compliant by World Triathlon allowing for the triathlon competitions to take place.”

Some background: The decision to hold some swimming events in the river raised eyebrows when it was first announced. Swimming in the Seine has been illegal for a century.

About $1.5 billion (1.4 billion Euros) was spent trying to clean up the river ahead of the Games.Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo swam in the river earlierthis month to display her confidence in the river’s water quality.

Get caught up: What happened at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday

From CNN staff

A little more than three years after a shocking case of the “twisties” caused her to withdraw fromTeam USA’s attemptat defending its gymnastics team gold, Simone Biles was back under the bright lights of an Olympic final.

The team cruised through the events and took home the gold. It marks Biles’ eighth at a Games, more than any other American in history.

If you missed the action today, here’s a recap of some of the highlights:

  • Gymnastics: Team USA had a huge lead in scoring heading into the final rotation, the floor exercise. The team put up solid scores on all of the other events — vault, balance beam and bars. Powerful floor routines from Suni Lee and Jordan Chiles put Team USA on the brink of winning gold. Biles was the last person scheduled to perform and clinched the remaining needed points. The arena was loud all night — especially when US gymnasts stuck a landing or waved to the crowd. Biles is so good that even her opponents were rooting for her, with some gymnasts clapping and even jumping up and down after her routines.
  • Women’s tennis: US starCoco Gaufflost 7-6 (7), 6-2 in an emotionally charged match against Croatia’s Donna Vekić. Late in the second set, Gauff was in tears while arguing a call. While on Gauff’s serve, a shot from Vekić originally was called out but quickly was overruled by the chair umpire. That gave the break to Vekić and a 4-2 lead before the Croatian went on to win. Another American, Emma Navarro, the 11th seed in the women’s tennis singles, was also knocked out after losing to China’s Zheng Qinwen.
  • Men’s tennis: On the men’s side, the Spanish duo of Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz will move on to the quarterfinals of the men’s doubles. Andy Murray, the former world No. 1, and his partner Dan Evans will also move on to the quarterfinals.
  • Swimming: Australia’s Kaylee McKeown beat Americans Regan Smith and Katharine Berkoff to win gold in the women’s 100m backstroke — breaking her own Olympic record and retaining the title that she claimed in Tokyo. In the men’s 800m freestyle event, Daniel Wiffen won gold and became the first Irish swimmer to win an Olympic medal.
  • Soccer: The USA men’s soccer team secured its place in the Olympic quarterfinals after beating Guinea 3-0 Tuesday. Kevin Paredes made two of those goals. USA currently stands second in the group, after France. France won all three of its group-stage games and will also advance to the quarterfinals.
  • Basketball: The France men’s basketball team pulled out a 94-90 victory over Japan in a game that went right down to the wire. The win moved France to the top of Group B with four points after winning in its first game versus Brazil, which will clash with Germany on Tuesday.
  • Rugby: Canada’s Women’s Sevens rugby team stunned the heavily favored and current world champion Australian sevens squad, defeating it 21-12. Canada ultimately won silver after losing to Black Ferns Sevens — the New Zealand national team — in the gold medal game. In the fight for the bronze medal, the USA Team came out on top after pulling off an upset against Australia in the final minutes of the match. It’s the USA’s first-ever Olympic medal in the sport — for either men or women.

What else we are watching: Organizers are still hoping that the men’s triathlon will take place Wednesday morning in Paris after it was postponed today due to poor water quality levels in the Seine. The women’s event is also scheduled to take place tomorrow. Schedule changes are also being made to the men’s and women’s surfing competitions as a result of “large, stormy surf with unfavorable winds” on Tuesday.

Olympic weather forecast: Paris reached 97 degrees today, making it the hottest day in more than two years

From CNN's Taylor Ward
2024 Paris Olympics: Simone Biles and Team USA clinch gold in gymnastics | CNN (11)

People cool down under the bridge at the Seine river during a heatwave in Paris, on July 30.

As the Olympic Games play out across Paris, the high temperature in the city Tuesday afternoon hit 97 degrees (or 36 degrees Celsius), making it the hottest day in the French capital since July 2022.

The intense heat has also fueled thunderstorms which have developed southwest of the city and are likely to bring rain and wind to Paris over the next few hours.Meteofrance has warned there could be up to 2 inches of rain in the heaviest downpours, as well as wind gusts up to 50 mph.

Temperatures will remain above average in Paris for the remainder of the week but will slowly decline each day, finally reaching values closer to normal (around 79 degrees Fahrenheit or 26 Celsius) by the weekend.

Andy Murray’s tennis career lives to see another day

From CNN's Sam Joseph

Andy Murray of Great Britain celebrates with partner Dan Evans after winning against Belgium, in Paris, on July 30.

Andy Murray is moving on to the quarterfinals of the men’s doubles, meaning that his legendary career will last a little bit longer.

Playing his last competitive tournament, the former world No. 1 and his partner Dan Evans defeated Sander Gille and Jordan Vliegen of Belgium 6-3, 6(8)-7(10), 11-9 to reach the last eight.

The British pair had the chance to close out the matchup in the second set with two match points, but Murray has become notorious for doing things the hard way in the latter stages of his career.

Evans double-faulted on the final point of the second, sending the match to a “champions tiebreak.” This time it was Murray and Evans’ turn to save match point before sealing the match with an emphatic Evans smash.

They will face Americans Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul or Robin Haase and Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands in the next round.

Biles on her record-setting medal haul: "I'm not really sure, I don't keep count"

From CNN's Kyle Feldscher

Simone Biles is making history, but she said she’s not keeping count.

With the team gold medal on Tuesday, Biles became the most decorated American Olympic gymnast of all time, adding to her title as the most decorated gymnast of all time.

A reporter listed off some of her accomplishments in her career and asked her what she thought about them.

“Honestly, I would have had to Google that so I’m not really sure, I don’t keep count,” she said. “I don’t keep stats, I just go out there and do what I’m supposed to and I’m doing what I love and enjoying it. So that’s really all that matters to me.”

Team USA likes French food, just not what they're getting in the Paris Olympic Village

From CNN's Kyle Feldscher

Following Team USA’s gymnastics win, a French journalist asked potentially the most loaded question of the post-competition press conference: Do the gold medalists like the food they’re being served in the Olympic Village?

Each member of Team USA looked at each other immediately after the question, as if they wanted to toe the line between being real and being polite.

Simone Biles emphasized that what they were being given in the Village is not proper French cuisine, and there’s a difference between food in the Village and proper Parisian food.

Hezley Rivera was a bit more straight forward about her impression of the fare in the Olympic Village.

“I don’t think it’s very good. At least what we’re having in the dining hall. I definitely think French food is good. But what we’re having in there, I don’t think it’s the best. But it gets the job done,” she said.

Jordan Chiles had kind words to say about the pizza — “It’s cheesy!” — but Henzler said everything else was pretty average.

Simone Biles said she felt immense relief after her first vault on Tuesday as she helped get Team USA started on their way to a gold medal.

In a moment of humanity, Biles admitted she was still thinking of Tokyo as she took the floor in Brazil.

Teammate Jordan Chiles echoed those thoughts.

“Yo, hallelujah, no flashbacks. No, nothing,” she said. “I was like, OK, like, all she needs to do is just do her normal. So me jumping up and down was just like a relief.”

From CNN's David Close

When asked about her feelings coming into the women’s team final on Tuesday, Simone Biles told reporters she was “feeling calm and ready” before the program.

Biles withdrew from the team event in Tokyo after she was affected by “the twisties,” which causes a gymnast to lose track of where their body is and how it moves through the air.

She was replaced by Jordan Chiles, who is her teammate again this year, in the team event and later explained that she needed to prioritize her mental health.

Chiles followed up Biles’ comments at the news conference Tuesday and said, “She is the greatest of all greats.”

Carlos Alcaraz celebrates with partner Rafael Nadal after winning their men’s doubles quarterfinals match on Tuesday.

It was another successful day at Roland-Garros for the tennis world’s new favorite double act.

The Spanish duo of Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz defeated the Netherlands’ Tallon Griekspoor and Wesley Koolhof 6-4, 6(2)-7 10-2 to move on to the quarterfinals of the men’s doubles.

“Nadalcaraz” took the first set after converting a late break point that allowed Alcaraz to serve out the set, but were pushed into a tiebreak by the Dutch pair in the second. Griekspoor and Koolhof came out on top to send the match into a tense first-to-10 tiebreak.

Nadal – who exited singles competition yesterday after a straight sets loss to longtime rival Novak Djokovic – seemed to come alive in the breaker, powering vintage forehand shots all over the court, including a blistering return that only just caught the line.

Roared on by the crowd on Court Philippe-Chatrier, the Spaniards comfortably closed out the tiebreak to book their place in the last eight, where they will face the American team of Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek.

The final rotation is set up for a major Simone Biles moment

From CNN's Kyle Feldscher
2024 Paris Olympics: Simone Biles and Team USA clinch gold in gymnastics | CNN (31)

Simone Biles looks on during competition on Tuesday.

The nature of an Olympic gymnastics competition is that it’s chaos.

There are four events going on at once, so it’s basically impossible to keep an eye on it all. But the floor exercise commands the most attention: It has the music, it’s in the center of the floor and it’s just one gymnast alone in an open area in an jam-packed arena.

And we are heading toward an incredible moment at the end of this final.

Simone Biles is the last gymnast scheduled to perform her floor exercise. And the nature of the length of floor routines means that all the other gymnasts are largely done with their apparatuses by the time the last performer on the floor begins.

It’s been all eyes on Biles all week. And now she could be the one to clinch gold, alone in the center of the Bercy Arena.

The USA women’s rugby sevens team pulled off a magical upset win over Australia to win the bronze medal on Tuesday.

Late in the match, Team USA trailed 12-7, but a length-of-the-field run and score by Alex Sedrick pulled the Americans level in the final seconds.

The subsequent conversion sealed the famous victory 14-12.

The Americans were full of joy while hugging and celebrating, while the Aussies were left stunned.

Mathias Lessort of France celebrates after scoring a basket against Japan on Tuesday.

Victor Wembanyama led the France men’s basketball team to a 94-90 victory over Japan in game that went right down to the wire.

Japan looked as though as it was headed for a huge upset victory over the host nation, but French guard Matthew Strazel had other ideas. He was fouled on a three-point attempt with 10 seconds left but still managed to nail the triple, before converting the resulting free throw to tie the game at 84 and produce the first overtime period of the men’s competition.

Wembanyama took over in overtime, scoring eight of France’s 10 points in the extra period. He stuffed the stat sheet in the win, posting 18 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, two steals and two blocks.

Japan pushed Les Bleus right to the final buzzer but failed to get things going offensively late, only scoring its first points of OT with 34 seconds left in game. Rui Hachimura posted 24 points for Japan but was ejected in the fourth quarter after being called for two unsportsmanlike fouls. Yuki Kawamura led the team with 29 points.

The win moves France to the top of Group B with four points after picking up a victory in its first game versus Brazil, who will clash with Germany later today.

How scoring works in Olympic gymnastics

From CNN's Elise Hammond
2024 Paris Olympics: Simone Biles and Team USA clinch gold in gymnastics | CNN (37)

Flavia Saraiva competes on the floor on Tuesday.

After completing their routines on vault, bars, beam and floor, the Olympic gymnasts are given a score that is made up of two different components — difficulty and execution.

Difficulty score: First, difficulty is exactly what you think it is. It is determined by a panel of two judges who consider two things: the most difficult skills in the routine, including the dismount, and how those skills are executed in succession, or the “connection value.” These things earn the gymnast points, according to the USA Gymnastics website.

Each judge on the difficulty panel comes up with a score and then they compare and reach a consensus, it said.

Execution score: Execution is determined by a six-person panel. The score begins at a 10 and judges make deductions for “errors and faults in technique, execution and artistry,” USA Gymnastics said. Of those six judges scores, the highest and lowest are dropped and the gymnast receives the average of the remaining four.

“The deductions for various errors range from 0.1 point for a small error to 1.00 point for a fall,” USA Gymnastics explains.

Team USA is competing in the women’s team final. Team scores are calculated by adding together the top three scores of each individual event.

Deteriorating wave conditions forced heats to be suspended after the men’s Round 3 and ahead of Round 3 of the women’s event which is still yet to get underway.

Wind blowing on shore and rain yesterday produced “wholly uncontestable” conditions, meaning that the women’s competition was suspended before it had even started.

Coco Gauff talks with an official during her match against Donna Vekić on Tuesday.

Coco Gauff suffered a third-round exit from the women’s tennis singles competition at the Paris Olympics, the most fraught moment coming in the second set when she engaged in a heated exchange with the chair umpire.

The 20-year-old American, a flag bearer for Team USA at the opening ceremony, was facing a break point when a line call, initially called out, was overruled by chair umpire Jaume Campistol.

But Gauff argued the point should have been replayed as the call was made just before she had hit the ball.

Gauff arguing with the umpire during her match on Tuesday.

Gauff immediately created three break points the following game, but Donna Vekić shut out the opening, saving the last with an inch-perfect lob before taking a 4-2 lead in the set.

The match was firmly in the Croatian’s control from the point, and she closed out the contest to set up a quarterfinal meeting with either Greece’s Maria Sakkari or Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk.

The dispute with the umpire in the second set, Gauff felt, didn’t alter the result of the match.

“I’m not going to sit here and say one point affected the result today, because I was already on the losing side of things before that point happened,” she said.

Olympians respond to "cardboard" beds in the village

From CNN's Antoinette Radford

As athletes from around the world arrived at the Olympic Village and started to settle in for a good nights sleep, they soon realized it would be more difficult than initially thought.

The bed frames themselves were manufactured especially for the games with recyclable materials while the mattresses were made with reused materials. According to the Olympic organizers, their firmness can be adjusted by flipping them over.

But, some athletes felt they left something to be desired for comfort.

Australian water polo player Tilley Kearns posted to now-viral video to TikTok describing the beds as “rock solid,” while her roommate can be heard saying “my back is about to fall off” in the background.

British diving olympian Tom Daley also posted a video to TikTok knocking on the bed and testing if it was sturdy.

At the 2021 Olympics, Paul Chelimo, a runner for Team USA suggested the beds were made of cardboard with the goal of “avoiding intimacy among athletes,” suggesting that they could only handle the weight of a single person.

The “anti-sex” beds soon became a rumor about the games, but Tokyo 2020 insisted it was for environmental reasons and they would be turned into recycled paper once the event was over.

CNN directly asked the Paris Olympics media team if the beds were made to stop frivolity in the camp, to which they responded:

“We know the media has had a lot of fun with this story since Tokyo 2020. But for Paris 2024, the choice of these beds for the Olympic and Paralympic Village is primarily linked to a wider ambition to ensure minimal environmental impact and a second life for all equipment used during the short period of the Games,” they said.

“It goes without saying that the quality of the furniture has been rigorously tested to ensure it is robust, comfortable and appropriate for all the athletes who will use it, and who span a very broad range of body types.”

China edges past North Korea in thrilling mixed table tennis final to win historic gold

China's Wang Chuqin, left, and Sun Yingsha play against North Korea's Kim Kum Yong and Ri Jong Sik during the mixed doubles table tennis final on Tuesday.

China rallied to edge past North Korea in a thrilling mixed doubles table tennis final.

The Chinese pair of Chuqin Wang and Yingsha Sun, the No. 1 ranked team in the tournament, were pushed to the limit by Jong Sik Ri and Kum Yong Kim, the lowest-ranked pair, before eventually winning 4-2.

Ri and Kim had already upset the odds on multiple occasions to make it this far and were again in sensational form in Tuesday’s gold medal match. But Wang and Sun were just too good on the day.

The match featured no shortage of outrageous shots and mind-boggling rallies, cheered on by what sounded like a China home match at times.

China has been utterly dominant in Olympics table tennis since it was first introduced at Seoul 1988, but this is the country’s first gold in the mixed doubles after it lost in the final to Japan at Tokyo 2020 on the event’s Olympic debut.

South Korea beat Hong Kong to take bronze.

The temperature in Paris soars to 95 degrees Fahrenheit, making it the hottest day of the year

Attendants cool a horse with spray mist during a dressage event at Versailles on Tuesday.

The temperature in Paris is currently 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 degrees Celsius), making Tuesday the hottest day of the year in the city.

The temperature at Paris-Orly airport at 3 p.m. local time (9 a.m. ET) was 95 degrees F (35 degrees C), but adding in the humidity, the heat index was 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).

The heat is already impacting some of the events, with the International Tennis Federation stipulating that the modification-of-games rule comes into effect once the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature — a measure of heat stress in direct sunlight which considers wind speed, cloud coverage and the sun’s angle – rises above 30.1 degrees C. It hit that measure at the Paris tennis courts at 3 p.m. local time, according to the ITF.

2024 Paris Olympics: Simone Biles and Team USA clinch gold in gymnastics | CNN (67)

Police officers cool off under misters in Paris on Tuesday.

Typically, once that Wet Globe Temperature is reached, the games can then play with the “modification of play” which involves a 10-minute break between the second and third sets during which time players can go to the bathroom, take a shower and have something to eat or drink. They cannot, however, talk with their coach or receive a medical evaluation.

If the temperature continues to rise at Roland Garros, suspension of games can be considered, the ITF website says.

USA's Coco Gauff stunned by Croatia's Donna Vekić in the women's singles third round

Coco Gauff reacts after a call goes against her while playing Croatia's Donna Vekić on Court Philippe-Chatrier at Roland Garros on Tuesday.

There’s been an early upset at the tennis on Court Philippe-Chatrier with US star Coco Gauff losing 7-6 (7), 6-2 in an emotionally charged match against Croatia’s Donna Vekić.

Gauff looked to be cruising in the first set, holding a 5-2 lead with a set point, but the match quickly ran away from her, which included losing the second set having been a break up on world No. 21 Vekić.

Late in the second set, Gauff was in tears while arguing a call that went against her on Philippe-Chatrier, the main court at Roland Garros. While on Gauff’s serve, a shot from Vekić originally was called out but quickly was overruled by the chair umpire, Jaume Campistol of Spain. That gave the break to Vekić and a 4-2 lead for the Croatian. Vekić went on to win 7-6(7), 6-2.

The argument lasted 5 minutes.

She eventually had to head to the back of the court, only for Vekić to overturn three break points the next game and go on to win the match.

With the victory, Vekić will face either Greece’s Maria Sakkari or Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in the quarterfinals.

The post was updated with Gauff’s comments during the match.

Angelique Kerber's retirement farewell tour continues into quarterfinals in Paris

From CNN's Jill Martin

Angelique Kerber’s farewell to tennis has been extended for yet another match, defeating Canada’s Leylah Fernandez 6-4 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals in Paris.

The 36-year-old German tennis star – who has won three grand slam singles titles, the Olympic silver at Rio 2016 and a total of 14 career singles titles – announced last week that Paris 2024 marks “the finish line” of her career. But with her play at Roland Garros, she’s seemingly been turning back the clock.

In Paris, she has beaten Naomi Osaka of Japan, Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian and now Fernandez, the No. 16 seed.

Kerber’s performance Tuesday was arguably her best yet, breaking serve six times and hitting 22 winners to 12 unforced errors.

Kerber had returned to tennis this season after taking maternity leave. Now, she’s in her first quarterfinal in a WTA Tour-level tournament for the first time in more than two years.

Correction: The post was updated to reflect that Kerber defeated Fernandez by a score of 6-4, 6-3.

Tatjana Smith reveals motivation behind incredible gold medal-winning swim

As the old cliché goes, there is no ‘I’ in team – and Tatjana Smith’s personalized t-shirt at the Paris Olympics encapsulated the phrase perfectly.

South Africa’s gold medal winner in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke, Smith had the names of every person who has influenced her swimming career printed on the back of her shirt.

Smith placed her new gold medal over her shoulder next to the phrase “Because of you, for you” at the top of the list of names.

The 27-year-old won South Africa’s first gold medal in the event since Atlanta 1996 and said she is going to keep her phone off for the time being as she anticipates a wave of congratulatory phone calls and messages.

“I think everyone is so proud,” she said.

Spain holds off furious Antetokounmpo-led Greek comeback in men's basketball

Alex Abrines of Spain, right, tries to pass while under pressure from Giannis Antetokounmpo of Greece on Tuesday.

The No. 2 team in the world will be happy to leave its Group A game Tuesday with a win after a furious Greek comeback led by Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Antetokounmpo scored 27 points to lead his team from a double-digit deficit in the second half, tying the game with about 4 minutes to go. But the Spanish were stronger down the stretch and put the game away in the final minute with clutch free throws.

The Spanish were led by Memphis Grizzlies’ player Santi Aldama’s 19 points and Alberto Diaz’s bucket in the final seconds made the scoreline look a bit larger than was probably fair to Antetokounmpo and the Greeks.

“I think [we won] with courage, defense,” Aldama said after the game.

On stopping two-time NBA MVP Antetokounmpo, Aldama said, “There’s no true strategy, but for us, it was just packing the paint, being physical, being in front of him. There’s no recipe to stop him, but courage, I think that’s the word that [summarizes] the game.”

Point guard Sergio Llull said that La Roja’s next objective was clear: “Our goal is to try to be in quarterfinals, to try to fly to Paris [when the competition moves to Bercy Arena]. This is the main goal now, and then we will see.”

Facilities for the triathlon event are seen on the Seine on Tuesday.

French triathlon federation technical director Benjamin Maze told French media on Tuesday that “there was a bit of anger and disappointment on the part of the triathletes,” as they found out today’s event had been canceled.

Maze said that that athletes are naturally disappointed by the developments since they have been preparing for this moment for years but added that it’s all part of the job.

“They know that they are doing an outdoor sport, even more so in triathlon. We knew that we had had problems with water pollution in recent days.” he said.

Some context: The race was moved to Wednesday due to poor water quality levels in the River Seine.

“Paris 2024 and World Triathlon reiterate that their priority is the health of the athletes. The tests carried out in Seine today revealed water quality levels that did not provide sufficient guarantees to allow the event to be held,” World Triathlon said in a news release.

Heavy rains battered Paris over the weekend, drenching Friday’sopening ceremonyandraising concerns about water quality in the river, which usually declines after rainfall.

Australia's Lani Pallister looks on during a swimming training session in Paris on July 24.

Australia’s Lani Pallister has withdrawn from the women’s 1500m freestyle competition after testing positive to Covid-19.

Pallister has instead decided to preserve her energy for the 4x200m relay on Thursday, the Australian Olympic Team said in a post to X Tuesday.

In a response to questions from CNN, an Australian Olympic Committee spokesperson said Covid was being managed “like any other respiratory illness,” and the team has “medical protocols in place to manage cases.”

Last week, at least five members of the Australian women’s water polo team — the Stingers — tested positive to Covid but according to the AOC they followed protocols “trained and have returned to normal operations.”

There have been several other respiratory illness viruses in Australian athletes since, including Covid, the spokesperson said: “But these have not had an impact on performance.”

After the Australian women’s water polo players tested positive, a Paris 2024 spokesperson said in a statement that are “protocols that are in place” to mitigate the spread of the virus, including recommending mask-wearing for people who test positive.

In the run-up to the ParisOlympics, athletes stepped up their preparations in order to maintain their edge over competitors.

But for Australia’s Matt Dawson, those preparations looked a little different this year, with the field hockey player opting to have part of his finger amputated in order to compete in the Games.

The 30-year-old Dawson injured the ring finger of his right hand after being struck by a hockey stick in a practice match just two weeks before he was due to represent the Kookaburras in Paris in what would be his thirdOlympic appearance.

The impact left the top of his finger almost entirely severed and had hisOlympic dreams hanging in the balance.

“Things got moving pretty quickly. And all I remember someone saying was, ‘We need to see a plastic surgeon.’”

So far, the Australian men’s hockey team has defeated Ireland and will take on Belgium in Paris this evening.

Paris prosecutors, in coordination with other relevant authorities, have launched a probe following reports of “aggravated incitement to racial hatred” and “incitement to discrimination,” including a man making antisemitic gestures during the Israel-Paraguay soccer match on Saturday.

Olympic organizers said in a statement that during the match at the Parc des Princes, “a banner bearing a political message was displayed and anti-Semitic gestures were made.”

The statement did not clarify what these gestures were.

Ukraine urges its athletesnot to shake hands with Russians at Olympics

From CNN's Radina Gigova in London

Ukrainian athletes are participating in nine different sporting events today – and as on every day during the Olympic Games, they are competing under the clouds of war in their homeland.

Ahead of the Olympics, the government ramped up its call for Ukrainian athletes to avoid shaking hands with Russian athletes, claiming they were “bearers of Russian propaganda and disinformation,” even if competing under a neutral flag.

The ministry said it wanted to “highlight the Olympic principles – fair play, excellence, solidarity, mutual respect, and friendship,” but that what Ukrainian athletes are facing instead is “brutal aggression,” including the destruction of sports facilities and deaths.

The ministry said Ukrainian athletes have been killed since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Wednesday he spoke with the athletes who will represent the country this year at the Olympics.

In May, Ukraine’s National Olympic Committee issued recommendations for athletes at the Olympics, which included avoiding contact with Russians and Belarusians so that possible “provocative actions” could be prevented.

Tom Pidco*ck of Great Britain, right, competes on Monday.

Great Britain’s Tom Pidco*ck made a miraculous recovery from a tire puncture on Monday to take the gold in the men’s mountain bike competition, retaining the title of Olympic champion he won in Tokyo three years ago.

How does the new gold medal compare?

“The strap’s more itchy on my neck,” Pidco*ck told CNN’s Amanda Davies with a laugh. “No, it’s pretty — it hasn’t really sunk in yet. Now, mainly, it’s kind of over, the build-up and everything, now I can just enjoy it and this is all that matters.”

Pidco*ck’s race looked to be over when he suffered a front wheel puncture on the third lap which cost him approximately 26 seconds and saw him slip down to ninth. But the 25-year-old dug deep and clawed his way back despite falling almost 40 seconds behind the leading rider, France’s Victor Koretzky. And in an astonishing finish, Pidco*ck passed Koretzky with just over a lap to go, with the pair going head-to-head all the way to the finish line.

Pidco*ck crosses the line to win gold on Monday.

Pidco*ck staved off a late charge from the Frenchman but, in the end, had enough to finish nine seconds clear to complete a remarkable race for the reigning Olympic gold medalist.

“It was certainly not easy. … it was a battle, a tough one at that,” he told Davies. “It was all going so well and I was lucky the (puncture) happened early and I was able to try and recover it.”

Pidco*ck has the words “play your cards right” written on his bike. Davies asked him what cards he played to grab another gold medal.

“I didn’t play the puncture card right,” he said. “I didn’t really — I just played the consistent, keep going card.”

A perfect 10 pose for an (almost) perfect 10 wave

Brazil's Gabriel Medina reacts after his monster 9.90 score in the 5th heat of the men's surfing round 3 on the French Polynesian Island of Tahiti on July 29.

It was a celebration worthy of the ages — or at least viral fame.

Surfer Gabriel Medina was taking on Kanoa Igarashi, the man who beat him at the Tokyo Olympics and eventually won silver, and he was looking to turn the tide this time around.

The Brazilian not only managed to take down the Japanese surfer, he did so in part thanks to a near-perfect 9.90-scoring wave on Day 3 of the surfing competition in Tahiti (yes, very, very far from Paris).

The resultant jubilation produced another moment of perfection: Medina leapt from his surfboard, raised his finger aloft and his board just managed to fly parallel to him as photographer Jerome Brouillet from Agence France-Presse snapped the shot.

The remarkable picture has spread across social media with Brazilians celebrating their surfer’s progress into the final eight of the competition, including Real Madrid and Seleção forward Rodrygo.

Still, while Medina has made it one step closer toward his goal of an Olympic medal, he certainly felt that the judges could have been more considerate of his efforts.

Still, while the performance on the water might have been a 10 out of 10, the picture was certainly the image of perfection.

Gold medalist Coco Yoshizawa of Team Japan (L) and Silver medalist Liz Akama of Team Japan (R) pose on the podium during the Women's Street Final on day two of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 at Place de la Concorde on July 28, in Paris, France.

With the oldest average population in the world, squeaky clean city streets, and something of a national reputation for adhering to the rules, Japan might not immediately leap out as a skater’s paradise.

But as events this week in Paris have once again shown, Japan’s teenage girls are on fire when it comes to women’s skating.

For the second consecutive Olympics, Team Japan dominated the street event – and it could do the same in the park category starting August 6.

The rise of Japanese skateboarders is surprising in a country thattypically frowns on public demonstrations of the sport.

Skating is prohibited by law in busy areas and mostly limited to skate parks, making it difficult for aspiring skaters to train in non-designated areas.

That, paired with the country’s aging population problem – Japanese birth rates hit arecord lowin 2023 – would set most sports up for a massive wipeout.

But the Olympics inclusion has ignited youth exposure and resources. The number of skateparks in the country since 2021 has nearly doubled to 475, according to the Japan Skatepark Association. After yet another impressive medal haul, there could be room for even more growth.

A general view of the Seine with theEiffel Tower in the background is seen in Paris, France, on July 29.

The men’s individual triathlon race at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games has been postponed to Wednesday due to poor water quality levels in the River Seine, World Triathlon has announced.

Originally scheduled for Tuesday, the World Triathlon, its medical team, the International Olympic Committee, and city officials decidedto postponethe men’s race.

“Despite the improvement on the water quality levels in the last hours, the readings at some points of the swim course are still above the acceptablelimits.”

The women triathlon is still scheduled for Wednesday and will take place prior to the men’s race, according to Olympic officials.

Swimming records, diving medals and surfing in Tahiti: What you missed yesterday

Olympic records and photo finishes: The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris are fully underway, and on Monday, more medals were added to the tally.

If you missed the action yesterday, here’s a recap of some highlights:

  • Women’s swimming: Canadian Summer McIntosh took the gold medal over American Katie Grimes in the women’s 400m individual medley. Fellow American Emma Weyant won the bronze. Tatjana Smith became a back-to-back gold medal winner in the women’s 100m breaststroke, repeating her feat from the Tokyo Olympics. The USA’s Lilly King, who holds the world record in this event, finished in fourth. In the women’s 200m freestyle, Mollie O’Callaghan of Australia set an Olympic record.
  • Men’s swimming: The men’s 200m freestyle race just came down to absolute millimeters with Romania’s David Popovici reaching the pad just .02 seconds ahead of Great Britain’s Matthew Richards. Luke Hobson of the USA took bronze, just .07 seconds away from gold. World record holder Thomas Ceccon of Italy won gold in the men’s 100m backstroke, finishing just .32 seconds ahead of Xi Jiayu of China.
  • Diving: Famed British diver Tom Daley won silver alongside partner Noah Williams in the men’s synchronized 10m platform. That marked the fourth medal of Daley’s long Olympic career.
  • Gymnastics: Japan’s men’s team snatched gold, outscoring China on the horizontal bar in the final moments of the competition. China was in pole position to claim gold heading into that final rotation but some costly mistakes dented the team’s chances. The US took bronze — the team’s first medal in this event for 16 years. Stephen Nedoroscik came in clutch for Team USA, scoring enough on the pommel horse — his specialty — to win the team a medal.
  • Basketball: The USA women’s basketball team defeated Japan in its first Olympic game in Paris, 102-76. Team USA is the defending champion and stacked with some of the best players in the WNBA. The women’s basketball team has won nine gold medals in the last 10 Olympic competitions. If they win again this year, it will be Team USA’s eighth gold in a row.
